NR's 14th State Champ Arrives in 2014 With Purdy's Dramatic Win in State 1000m

Junior Eric Favors Places 2nd in Shot With NR School Record 63 Foot Bomb

Purdy Wins School's First Ever Championship at 1000m; After 27 Years, NR Has New Shot Put Record Holder

Immortal...NR's Purdy Earned Distance Running Immortality by Joining the Pantheon of Raider Athletes Who Found a Way to Get To the Top

Cornell University, Ithaca, NY - Every step of every workout and every race matters.  Look no further than North Rockland's 14th state champion as proof that each step counts.  Amongst all of the amazing accomplishments Liam Purdy has experienced this season like school and county records, nationally televised races, and US #1 rankings, he knew there was one thing that would be missing had he not accomplished it: a state championship.  State championships are possibly the most rare of feats in track and field because, unlike national championships, you can't pay your way there and you have to be the best on that day, at that moment.  Throw into this challenge the weight of being the #1 seed and odds on race favorite at a meet where underdogs almost always emerge to steal state glory.  One can clearly see why only 13 athletes in North Rockland cross country and track and field's storied history captured that moment to become legendary.  Purdy's moment came with over 400m to go in his 1000m run.  After watching Saratoga's Jay Navin run 2:27.72 in the 2nd heat, Purdy's task became that much harder.  Not only would he have to beat Navin's exceptional time out of the previous heat, but everyone in the star-studded field of his own race.  With just over 400m left, Purdy moved to take the lead once and for all in order to capture state glory, and was immediately pursued by Northport's Mike Brannigan.  Purdy crossed the line first in 2:27.68, just 2 hundredths of a second ahead of Brannigan's 2:27.70 to become North Rockland's newest and 14th state champion in cross country and track and field.  Eric Favors had a state meet he won't soon forget either.  The junior broke Phil Caraher's 27 year old NR school record set at the state championships in March of 1987 with an epic throw of 63-00.5, a personal best of nearly two feet on track and field's biggest stage.  Favors' placed second overall to Benjamin Bonhurst of Smithtown West (63-07.5).  The 4x4 relay of Jayson Bretton, Tarique Wilson, Ony Echefu and Purdy placed third overall to make the medal stand in 3:32.29. Wilson, a junior, earlier had placed 7th overall in the 55m hurdle final in 7.83.  Senior Harrison Foley placed 19th in the shot put.  results continued
