First of Their Kind...The 2009 North Rockland Boys Stood Alone With a 132 pt. Victory at the New York State Federation Championships
Bowdoin Park, Wappinger's Falls, NY - The North Rockland Boys won their school's first Federation Championship with a 132 point total at the 2009 NYS Cross Country Federation Championship held at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger's Falls. The team that has never said "die" during the year fought tooth and nail over each of the 5,000 meters that is Bowdoin Park. Like all Federation Championships, the first mile was a mass of humanity fighting for running room which included state champion Nick Hughes, who placed 4th overall (16:08.9) after fighting his way up from the twenties after the first mile. Without their dependable veteran right up front, chances of North Rockland emerging as champions looked doubtful, but seniors Conor Mallon and Charlie Lagos rescued their teammates with an absolutely superb start in the top 20 right along side Hughes which is unfamiliar territory for the duo. Mallon, who was 34th overall in last week's Class AA race, finished 34th overall in the Federation final in 16:52.4. Lagos was right on Mallon's shoulder in 35th 16:52.7. James Naglieri (56th, 17:06.2) and Nick Bien-Aime (87th, 17:22.0) sealed the state championship for North Rockland. results continued

#1 Man...Nick Hughes Paid the Price for Years In Order to Become North Rockland's First Cross Country State Champion
SUNY Plattsburgh, NY - If 2007 state meet cross country fans at Norwood-Norfolk high school wanted to find New York State's future champion of 2009 they would have to look all the way back to the tall, albeit scrawny, kid back in 56th place. In his first season of cross country, Nick Hughes had qualified for the state meet, but a 56th place was as much as he could muster. In two years time, Nick Hughes was relentless in his training; every minute, lap and repetition was a test which he never backed down from. Every race he qualified for, pass or fail, was a learning experience. A year ago he even spoke to classmates in a speech how one day he would turn that 56th place into a top ten and finally a number one. How prophetic that public speaking speech was. Nick Hughes became North Rockland Cross Country's first state champion in school history with a hard fought 5k performance of 15:26.3 at the 2009 NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships held in Plattsburgh, NY. After a commanding start found him jostling for position in the top five for most of the first mile, Hughes continued to battle in the top three in the last half of the race and was no less than ten meters behind Ward Melville's Quinn Raseman and Shaun Thompson of Baldwinsville, when they entered the track area for the finish. After one competitor slipped and fell, Hughes seized his opportunity and blasted the last 200m to the win and cross country immortality. The kid who finished 56th was now the champion who achieved his dream. North Rockland's second bid for history fell short as a vulnerable NY#1 Fayetteville-Manlius fought from gun to line to beat the NY #2 Raiders who did not take early advantage of the race. results continued
