Rockland Cross Country Athlete of the Season award: North Rockland's Jamieson
Jamieson's Quick Rise Paced North Rockland
By Jeff Montez The emergence of Carlos Jamieson into an elite runner came calmly, smoothly and without much fanfare. It is as if the North Rockland junior and the rest of his team knew that Jamieson's time would come-now. He took hold of the No. 1 spot in Rockland distance running and by all accounts will not be letting go of that position anytime soon.
"Carlos developed into a different class of athlete," coach Barry Baloga said. "Every race, he improved with discipline and focus." He entered the season as the No. 1 runner on a strong North Rockland squad and guided a talented Raiders team to one of its best seasons ever. Meet after meet, he defended his claim as Rockland's best, never more impressive than at the state Federation championships. You wouldn't have known it by his postrace demeanor. :"I got out way too slow," Jamieson said of the early moments of the race on Bowdoin Park's 3.1 mile course. "I got caught in traffic once I got past the gate. It got ugly." He placed 11th in 16:26.81. It's a keen observation by someone who has grown considerably as a leader and as a championship runner over the season, one of the reasons Jamieson is The Journal News runner of the year. He leapt out of the shadows of former North Rockland stars Miguel Reyes and Dennis Gutierrez immediately, winning his first major meet, the Suffern Invitational in 15:26, fast for an early season meet. His furious pace wouldn't stop there. He led the Red Raiders to a second-place finish in race E at the Manhattan College Invitational, placing fourth individually in 12:56.0. All this led to his Rockland County championship, an 18-second victory in 15:21.08 at Bear Mountain State Park. Two weeks later, he led the Red Raiders to a fourth-place at the state PHSAA meet, clocking a eighth-place 16:46.8 in the Class A race. Never did he forget his team either. His team was right behind Jamieson as the Red Raiders dominated the No. 2 spot in the state sportswriters poll for most of the season. "We've got a whole bunch of dedicated guys," Jamieson said. Jamieson said the connection with his team helped him grow as a runner on three fronts: developing a strategy with his opponents, learning the area's courses, and understanding how his own body responds to his furious pace. He never faltered in the process. "Carlos accepted his position on the team and was an absolutely valiant leader and decided this was the year he was going to become the distance runner he knows he could be," Baloga said. Jamieson said a summer spent running almost daily with teammates, including John Martinez and Erik Phelan, was a key to his success. He hopes this success will carry over into the upcoming winter track and field season. |
