Cross country: Cain, Talt excel at Federation meet

WAPPINGERS FALLS -- Finishing up her first season running cross country, Bronxville freshman Mary Cain ended the season on a positive note with a strong showing at the New York state Federation meet at Bowdoin Park on Saturday.</ p>

Of the 288 runners who competed in the girls race, Cain finished in 14th place with a time of 18 minutes, 55.6 seconds to lead all Section 1 competitors.

"I'm just amazed by my times this year," Cain said of her success this season. "I superseded all of my goals and I'm just really proud of that. Next year I know what I have to try to do to get even better. In a way, it was just a learning experience for me."

In the boys race, Suffern senior Tyler Frigge used a personal best to become the top finisher for Section 1, placing 31st with a time of 16:36.3.

"I was pretty happy with it," Frigge said of his performance. "It just makes me happy when all of the work in practice pays off. It's a tough race to run when everyone is so close in ability .

"I'm pretty proud of my season and was happy to finish with a good race."

Mamaroneck's Gina Talt finished right behind Cain in the girls race, the senior placing 15th in 18:56.5, while Meredith Rizzo of Bronxville finished 17th in 19:02.6.

For Lakeland/Panas junior Caroline Casin, the 2010 cross country season was all about perseverance. Casin -- who finished 34th at the Federation meet with a time of 19:24.3 -- wasn't even sure she would be able to compete this season after she sustained a third-degree sprain of her left ankle in August.

"I wasn't even expecting to run this season because I was hurt," Casin said. "And then to come back and make it to states and to feds, I think that's a really big thing even if I don't acknowledge that right away."

Casin injured her ankle practicing running hurdles.

"I waited two weeks and went to a cross country camp and my ankle didn't get better until the end of September," she said. "Throughout the season you get kind of tired, but you always have that feeling that you want to do well and I definitely used that."

Competing in his final cross country race of his varsity career, North Rockland's James Naglieri wanted to leave everything out on the course at the Federation meet.

While Naglieri would have liked a top-10 finish, he was happy with 33rd place and a time of 16:39.3.

"I wanted to go out really hard and, depending on whether this was going to be my last race or not, I didn't want to take any chances," Naglieri said. "I wanted to go out and run 3.1 miles as hard as I could and I feel like I did that."

While Naglieri may not have had his ideal season as a senior, he can be proud of how he handled the ups and downs he faced throughout.

"Looking back, it was a roller-coaster ride," he said. "I've had a few good races here and some poor races there, but that's life. You fall down and you have to get back up and I think that I did a good job of handling that."
