Red Raiders win fifth Rockland title in six years

NEW YORK - A.J. Savoia said he wasn't sure if they made eye contact. But the message with his North Rockland teammate was understood.

Nobody passes us. We're going to get every point we can.

With about 300 meters remaining in the 1,600, Savoia controlled the lead and teammate Christian Mendez was behind. But it was clear that Mendez' earlier race in the 1,000 was still beating up his legs. The grimace on his face indicated such.

Nanuet's Kevin Gulino wedged his body between the two Red Raiders, when it seemed that Mendez couldn't offer any more of himself. Despite the fact that all his body signals said he would break down, he didn't.

"I saw A.J. in front of me and I just knew I had to go," Mendez said. "When we got to the last lap I think the kid from Nanuet was still in front of me. I knew I had to give it everything I had."

His back straightened and his arms became pistons again. Savoia extended his lead. Mendez went chasing behind. Savoia won in 4:30.5 and Mendez was second in 4:31.7. Both were personal bests.

It was the epitome of what a county meet is about - when a single point can make an athlete forget about the pain for one more second.

North Rockland won the Rockland County championship yesterday at the New Balance Armory with 138 points, the Red Raiders' fifth title in six years.

"Everyone knew exactly what they had to do," Savoia said. "We knew that we didn't need any superhuman efforts. Coming in, we knew that if everyone just did their job that we would be all right."

Savoia won the 3,200 earlier in 9:43.3. Mendez won the 1,000 in 2:39.2 with teammate Colin Galvin sprinting up for third place in the last 50 meters. He finished in 2:45.0.

"We had some fantastic efforts," North Rockland coach Gene Dall said. "Guys came through in their last throws. Guys came through in their last jump. Galvin getting third in the 1,000 was huge. Kids really did the job today."

Clarkstown South finished second with 109 points and Ramapo was third with 53. The Vikings' Nick Estis looked fully recovered from a hamstring strain that forced him to miss half the season. He won the 300 in 35.7 and the 600 in 1:25.8. Teammate Marcus Stewart won the 55 hurdles in 8.23 and Keith Francis won the 55 in 6.78.

Enbani Moore of Suffern won the high jump in 6-2 and the long jump in 19-9 1/4 .

North Rockland's Ray Lund was one of those Dall talked about coming through when it counted. Lund won the shot put in a personal-best 49 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Kareem Smith of Nanuet led the event headed into the final throw. All Lund had was a 45-foot safety attempt after he fouled on his first throw.

'I just got pumped up," he said. "This is my senior year. This was my last throw in my last county meet."

He knew it was his best toss when it left his hand.

"I went crazy," he said. "It's big. The team looks to me to put up as many points as I can, to get my 10 points where I'm supposed to. There's a lot of seniors on this team. When you can contribute to a team like North Rockland, it's tremendous to contribute to a program like this. There's no better feeling."
