Class A: Thompson leads Red Raiders' return
(Original publication: February 20, 2007) NEW YORK - Runners lined up along the track before start of the 300 meters at the New Balance Armory. While Norman Thompson shuttled with his competitors he caught the eye of his North Rockland coach, Gene Dall. "He looked at me and said, 'I'm gonna win this race," Dall said. And he did. Thompson ran to a personal-best 35.7 seconds to win the 300 at the Class A championships yesterday, leading the Red Raiders to the team title with 73.5 points. "I just wanted to get out fast and I did," he said. "I was happy about that. I looked at everyone else in the race and I had confidence that I could win."' He held off New Rochelle's Xavier Mateen, who finished second in 35.9. "He's a man of his word," Dall said. "That really changed the momentum of the meet. That really invigorated the team and we turned it around from then on." North Rockland got off to a rough start. Thompson had trouble out of the blocks in the 55 and didn't' place. Yusef Mahmud-Bey was disqualified in the 600 and the team had a number of potential scorers dealing with sickness. But once Thompson won with a time no one expected, the team regained its footing. The Class A title meant a complete reemergence for North Rockland, which had won four straight league, county and section titles until last year when they lost all three. But yesterday the Red Raiders began a new triple-crown streak. "Coach was just telling us to finish our season," said Manny Martinez, who cleared 11 feet, 6 inches to tie for second in the pole vault. "We just came in here looking to win. We knew that if we all did what we were supposed to that we would. ... We're back where we want to be." Senior A.J. Savoia cruised to a win in the 3,200 in 10:01.7. He finished second in the 1,600 in 4:26.1 and anchored the winning 3,200 relay that finished in 8:21.9. New Rochelle finished second with 59 points and kept the meet close into the relays but simply didn't have the depth that North Rockland carried. "Roz (New Rochelle coach Rosalind Gallino) is a good coach," Dall said. "She's really turned the program around. They've got quality kids. You can look at them at other meets and see, when they get to the bigger meets with more schools they are going to do better because they have quality points that you're not going to take away. Last year when she took over in the spring, I knew they would be contenders from now on." Dall was talking about kids such as Menelik Lewis, who won the 55 hurdles in 7.92. He also finished second in the triple jump in 42-11 3/4. Teammate Pierre Elizer placed second in the hurdles in 8.05. "We just came to the track today and we wanted to prove that we can be here," Lewis said. "I'm sure a lot of people didn't think that we could place in the top three." One of the most impressive performances of the day came from North Salem's Alex Malikian. He won the 600 in a personal-best 1:22.4, a time that shows he can earn a qualifying spot for the state meet at the state qualifier Sunday at West Point, in one of the most competitive events in Section 1. Malikian took over the lead from Clarkstown South's Nick Estis at the 200 mark and kept pulling away from the field. Scarsdale's Julian Sheinbaum won the 1,600 in 4:24.5. Teammate Jeremy Whyte won the triple jump in 46-3. Suffern's Enbani Moore won the high jump in 6-3 and finished second in the long jump in 20-1. Mount Vernon's Robert Pope won the shot put in 51-6 and Kirk Anderson of Roosevelt won the 55 in 6.53. Ramapo's Kevin Malivert, Shaquan Belizare, Vladimir Desamours and Chidi Ezemma won the 800 relay in 1:30.7.
