Raider DMR 11th Overall at National Scholastic Champs

Raiders Run 7th Fastest Time in Rockland County History; Relay Breaks 10:30

Major Leap...The NR DMR On Day One of the NSIC Was Rewarded with Breaking 10:30

The Armory, NYC - On day one of the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, the North Rockland distance medley relay of Christian Mendez, Norman Thompson, Yusef Mahmud-Bey and AJ Savoia ran a seasonal best 10:29.99 out of the unseeded heat.  The time ranked them eleventh overall in the competition.  The time was keyed by middle legs Thompson (50.1) and Mahmud-Bey (1:59.1) who kept the Raiders' hopes alive of breaking 10:30.  Senior AJ Savoia split 4:22.2 for 1600m on the anchor leg to slip under 10:30 and finish third behind Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake, NY and Brookline, Massachusetts.  Their time stands as the 7th fastest time in Rockland County indoor track and field history.  North Rockland holds the county record of 10:17.04 set in 2005. results continued

Barton Hall, Ithaca, NY - North Rockland senior AJ Savoia ran 9:37.34 in the seeded heat of the 3200m run at the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships.  Savoia ran in the top four for much of the first 1600m (4:41.0) but never adjusted to the second half surges of his opponents. The senior's time earned him an eighth place finish. Another Raider senior, Norman Thompson, ran 37.21 in heat two of the 300m run, but did not qualify for the finals.  Junior Manny Martinez no-heighted in the pole vault at the opening mark of 12 feet.  results continued

Three Raiders Qualify for State Championship

Martinez, Thompson, Savoia Headed to Cornell University

Protests, Sit-Ins and Military Police, Oh My!!!...The Ugly Side of Sports Left NR's Qualifiers in the Dark

Gillis Field House, USMA - North Rockland senior Norman Thompson continued his streak of fantastic performances, winning the Section One State Qualifier in the 300m to earn him his first individual trip to the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships, held on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.  Thompson ran into the lead right from the gun and never relinquished the top spot, finishing in 36.64.  Junior Manny Martinez's state meet qualifier in the pole vault was just as impressive as his teammate Thompson's.  Martinez vaulted into sectional prominence as he cleared 12-0, tying the top mark of 12 feet set by Roy C. Ketchum's Yardley Kechinover.  The trip to the state championships will be Martinez's first as well.  In the 3200m run, junior AJ Savoia placed third, qualifying via the state standard.  In the 1600m run, eighth grader Brendan Collins broke the 5 minute barrier in his last race of the season.  Collins' time of 4:57 marks the tenth Raider to accomplish the feat this season.  results continued

CROWNED!

NR Wins Indoor Triple Crown With Section Championship

Thompson Ignites Late Meet Team Rally In 300m Win

Savoia Wins 3200m, 4x8 Relay Victorious, Maisonette Energizes Team in High Jump

Three the Hard Way...It Wasn't Easy, But These Raiders of 06-07 Managed To Accomplish a Difficult Task

NYC Armory - With the his team trailing by six points to New Rochelle, Norman Thompson told himself that he was going to win the 300m.  Thompson, who had been one of the Raiders'  top performers during the course of the season, had his bouts of inconsistency in the weeks leading up to the Sectional Championships, but with his team's chances of reclaiming the indoor triple crown hanging in the balance, Thompson delivered.  The senior ran 35.7 to edge New Rochelle's Xavier Mateen, but more importantly propelled his teammates to make one final surge going into the last events.  Another Raider that delivered a motivating performance was Alex Maisonette.  The junior high jumper placed second in the event with a leap of 6-1.  Maisonette's efforts earned him his personal best along with an important eight points.  Senior AJ Savoia led the way in the distance events claiming the 3200m run, placing second in the 1600m run and anchoring the winning 4x800m relay with teammates Christian Mendez, Colin Galvin, and Yusef Mahmud-Bey.  The Raiders totaled 73.5 to win their 32nd sectional title in either Cross Country or Track and Field in their program's history.  results continued

Senior's Personal Best Highlights Raider Action at 2nd Annual Coaches Invite

Jersey City, New Jersey - North Rockland senior AJ Savoia nearly let a win in 1600m at the Section One Coaches Invitational get away from him in the last two laps.  But in a final move in the last 110 meters that evoked memories of former Raider distance runner Carlos Jamieson, who was most noted for his flair for the dramatic, nearly never happened.  Savoia surged past Brendan Ceriello of Arlington coming off of the final turn to win the race in a personal best of 4:26.7.  results continued

Second Strong Championship Performance of Season

Savoia Leads Team with Three Wins; Lund Wins Shot on Last Throw

Getting Stronger...These 2006-07 Red Raiders Have One More Championship Meet in the Armory

NYC Armory - The true measure of most championship teams is how willing each team member is to put forth their finest effort at the right time.  That right time for the Red Raiders happened to be in the confines of the 168th Street Armory at the 2006-07 Rockland County Championships.  As expected, the Red Raiders got "A" level efforts from the likes of AJ Savoia, who won the 1600m and 3200m runs and anchored the winning 4x8 relay.  Ray Lund showed veteran composure as he won the shot put on his last throw in a new PR of over 49 feet.  Christian Mendez added some punch to the meet with a victory in the 1000m and a stellar second place in the 1600m run behind Savoia.  But these efforts were only part of the championship story.  Colin Galvin emerged as a top line scorer, running up into third in the 1000m run with a frenzied 50m kick. Lou Maio (4th), Chris Carrington (5th) and Chris Figluizzi (6th) swept the final three scoring spots in the 3200m run.  Damien Shannon produced a gutsy effort and was rewarded with 6th place and new PR in the 1600m run.  John Grant helped the team's cause tremendously as he pole-vaulted himself to a new PR of 10'6.  Vinnie Gamboli staged a fine effort in the shot put woth a sixth place performance.  Other Rockland County champions included Gladimir Sanon in the triple jump and the 3200m relay of Savoia, Mendez, Galvin and Yusef Mahmud-Bey.  North Rockland finished the championship meet with 139 points.  results continued

Savoia Goes Sub 9:30, Lund Eclipses Own School Record; 4x8 Runs Sub 8:10

Leading Off...Christian Mendez has set his sights higher for the Raiders' 4x8 relay this season.

NYC Armory - With the championship season of 2007 soon approaching, the North Rockland Red Raiders were looking to post some strong performances at the annual Archbishop Molloy Stanner Games.  Senior Ray Lund began the meet by besting his own school record in the weight throw and later broke into the 48 foot range in the shot on his last throw.  In his first 3200m run of the season, senior AJ Savoia clocked a personal best 9:29.17 to place second behind state and national steeplechasing opponent, Kevin McDermott of Chaminade.  Savoia's 3000m split of 8:48.0 enroute to his 3200m time stands as the #3 all-time in Rockland County.  At the end of the meet, the 4x8 relay of Christian Mendez, Yusef-Mahmud-Bey, Manny Martinez and Savoia ran 8:09.44 to place second overall.  In the boys 1600m run, two Raiders ran their first sub five minute times.  Sophomore Chris Carrington and junior Lou Maio each ran 4:57 to break the important barrier.  Earlier in the season, sophomore Chris Figluizzi broke the barrier with a 4:59. results continued
