Martinez 4th in Pan-Am Junior Championship Steeple

Fastest Ever Steeple Final Demolishes Meet Record

USA All The Way...NR's Martinez got his first taste of the best steeplers the world has to offer

Windsor, Ontario - North Rockland graduate John Martinez ran 9:18.71 in the finals of the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2005 Pan-Am Junior Championships held on the campus of the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.  Running for Team USA in his first international competition, Martinez ran strong against Canadian collegiate heroes Chris Winter of the University or Oregon and Alex Genest of The Secondary School of Paul-Lejeune.  Trying to hang on to the top three past 2,400m, Martinez found himself alone in fourth where he ended up finishing as the race's top prep.  Cuba's nineteen year old national champion and steeple record holder Jose Sanchez-Cairo ran 8:43.96 to shatter the existing meet record of 8:57.63.

Oh Say Can You See...Martinez set his sights high and came up big in the steeple in California

The Home Depot Center, Carson, CA - A day before he officially graduated from North Rockland High School, John Martinez started the celebration early.  The Red Raider senior from Stony Point, NY won the 3,000m steeplechase title at the 2005 US Junior National Championships held at The Home Depot Center on the campus of the University of California at Dominguez Hills.  His time of 9:06.60 slaughtered his existing mark of 9:13.3 and earned him a spot on the United States national team which will compete at the 2005 Pan-American Junior Championships held in Windsor, Ontario.  Martinez, who held second and third place for most of the first 1200m, passed leader Jared Swehosky of Salem TC with just under 1600m to go and opened a commanding lead which he would never relinquish.  Martinez's time in the event currently ranks him #6 all-time US and #3 all-time in New York State.

There were numerous outstanding performances recorded as the 2005 Red Raider Relays kicked off its 18th annual event.  Despite the fact that most of the finals were on the second day, there was plenty of excitement on the day one. Both the boys' and girls' 1600m runs came down to the last 100m. Ellen Dougherty of Riverhead claimed the women's race in 5:01.81, passing Bronxville's Amanda Hudson in the last 100m who ran 5:02.63. This race proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day, with four ladies under 5:10. Alana Levy from Horace Greeley was third in 5:04.63 while Kara McKenna ran 5:06.11 for fourth. The boys' mile proved to be equally exciting with Carlos Jamieson passing Somers' Alex Bean in the last 75m to win in 4:26.56. Alex Bean was second in 4:27.23 while two others broke 4:30. In the girls' 3200m run, Lynne Mundy ran 10:59.33 leading wire to wire with Suffern's Mary Rose Consiglio placing second in 11:26.43. In the last race of the day, the boys' 5000m was won by Jonah Blumstein. Blumstein made a gutsy mid race surge and held of a late charge from Monroe Woodbury's Kyle O'Brien to win in 15:51.86. O'Brien was second with a time of 15:52.92. In the field events, national champion John Hickey wasted no time in winning the boys' discus with a throw of 166' 8".  Girls' shot put, senior Caitlin Kelly of Hanover Park won with a throw of 40' 6". results continued

The second day of the Red Raider Relays proved to be more exciting than the first. "Outstanding Male Running Performer" of the meet Alex Reid of Middletown started off his amazing day winning the 400m intermediate hurdles with a time of 55.91. Later in the day, he came back to win the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.73 over North Rockland's Robert Silva who placed 2nd with a time of 15.09. "Outstanding Female Running Performer" Lynne Lane of New Rochelle started off her day by winning the 100m dash in a new meet record of 12.22 breaking the old record by .04. A few hours later, she won the 200m dash in a near record time of 24.72. If that wasn't impressive enough, she rallied her 4x100m relay team to a second place finish with her blazing anchor leg. Other meet records that were broken were by "Outstanding Female Field Event Performer" Caitlin Kelly of Hanover Park. She swept both the shot put and discus winning the latter in a meet record of 131' 4". Likewise, "Outstanding Field Event Performer" John Hickey established a new shot put meet record by over five feet with his throw of 63' 10.5". Other meet records that were broken were the women's Distance Medley Relay and Women's 4x800m relay. Suffern's Distance Medley Relay crushed the existing meet record by twenty-five seconds with their impressive victory by thirty-eight seconds with a time of 12:15.89. The Bronxville women's 4x800m relay broke their own meet record winning the relay by almost twenty seconds with a time of 9:29.32. Newburgh Free Academy had a very successful day winning the boys' distance medley relay and sprint medley relay races, both anchored by Jason Lakritz. The Goldbacks also claimed victory in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:25.73. The Red Raiders placed second in the men's and women's distance medley relays. Once again, the Red Raider Relays turned out to be a very successful meet. We'll see you again at the 19th annual meet in 2006. results continued
