White Plains, NY - A year after the North Rockland Red Raiders had to leave the friendly confines of White Plains High School and the Glenn D. Loucks Games because of a scheduling conflict with last year's Rockland County Championships, AJ Savoia  brought the Red Raiders back.  The junior accomplished what the likes of Todd Sinclair and Miguel Reyes had done before him in winning the Loucks 3000m steeplechase.  Savoia, who led the race from wire to wire won in a time of 10:00.35.  Teammate Joe Grimm was fourth in the event in 10:36.07.  Savoia's victory is the fourth North Rockland win in the steeple which marks the most titles won by a team in the event in the meet's 39 year history.  Adding to the weekend's excitement was the performance of junior thrower Ray Lund.  Lund earned a third place in the discus with a throw of 135-05.  Other great performances were turned in by the multiple relay efforts of Norman Thompson and Ahmad Jeffrey, the triple jump personal best set by Gladimir Sanon and the pentathlon personal best of Anthony Didio.  results continued

What Weather?!...Not Even A Drizzle Could Keep the RRR's '06 Stars From Shining

by Ronald Landayan, staff reporter

Cordisco Field - There were numerous outstanding performances recorded as the 2006 Red Raiders kicked off their 19th annual Red Raider Relays. Though, the first day of The Red Raider Relays was a qualifier for many events there were still many exciting moments. The track was packed and the crowd was deafening. The girls’ 1600m run kept everyone on their feet from start to finish. Sarah McCurdy from Bay Shore made a move after two laps, passing last years medalist Kara McKenna. McCurdy finished with a time of 5:00.18 to break the current record at the meet by almost two seconds. Arianna Garrison of Newburgh who also finished strongly, came in 2nd place with a time of 5:03.28,  just a second in front of 3rd place Kara McKenna. The boys’ 1600m proved to be equally thrilling with Kyle O’Brien of Monroe Woodbury taking a gutsy mid race move after the first two laps. O’ Brien held on and passed the finish line first in 4:28.89. The mile was not the only event with a thrilling finish. The last event, the 5k "under the lights" was as quoted by many coaches and competitors as, "A race that they will always remember." The grueling 12 lap race was jaw-dropping, and no one had anticipated that Bean would drop out after 8 laps, leaving first up for grabs. With the opportunity in hand Colin Anderson, and Bobby Krauss jolted past Bean. They battled it out for the remaining laps, shoulder to shoulder, without looking back. Krauss had the upper hand until the last two laps where Colin Anderson made his move. Though not anticipated by the crowd, the determined Anderson beat out Krauss to take first. Both competitors had stellar times of 15:39.05 and 15:44.34.  The field events were also very close and many were inches away from a medal. Bianca Fung of North Babylon won the varsity Girls triple jump with an unbelievable jump of 18-00.50 and beat out Whitney Ford of White plains by almost a foot. In the girls varsity shot put, Kadine Johnson left the field behind with a throw of 42-03.25 to take the gold.

The second day of the Red Raider Relays proved to be more exciting than the first. Even bad weather failed to mock the competitors as seen through the meet's performances. Outstanding Male Track Performer" of the meet, Mike Cuppari won the 110 m hurdles with a blistering time of 14.99.
Newburgh Free Academy's David McFadgen won outstanding field performance with his booming 45-03.00 triple jump.  Lynne Layne of New Rochelle was named the "Michelle Dall Memorial Outstanding Female Track Performer" for the second straight year. Layne started off her day winning the 100m dash with a time of 12.18 to break her own record of 12.22. Nearly an hour later, the senior Layne came back to win the 200m with a time of 24.90. If that wasn’t enough, Layne cooled down and returned to anchor her 4x100 relay team to first place with a time of 50.48. However, Layne was not ready to call it a day. Layne cooled down again and came back to run the anchor leg for the New Rochelle 4x4 team. The race was very tight, but Layne pulled ahead and took the gold for her relay team. Likewise, The North Rockland girls varsity 4x4 team put up a valiant effort and Britanny Clark anchored and took second only two seconds behind Layne. Kadine Johnson of New Rochelle was named "The Outstanding Female Field  Performer" of the meet and her throws backed up her title. To start off the meet, Johnson took first in the discus with a throw of 109-01 and beat 2nd place Valerie Winberry by almost 10 feet. Johnson then came back to take gold in the shot put. Her throw of 42-03.25 bested the rest of the field by almost two feet. The girls 800m run was also very exciting with Sarah McCurdy of Bay Shore taking first place again with a time of 2:15.86. The day would not have been complete without more record breaking performances. The Suffern 4x8 team lead off by Shelby Greany and anchored by Kara McKenna ran 9:24.45 to crush the previously set record. The relay team beat 2nd place Cornwall by more than 30 seconds. The 800m run record was also threatened, but first place Alex Bean was a couple seconds off, finishing in1:57.93. Also in the 800m, North Rockland’s own Ahmad Jeffrey took 5th place in outstanding fashion almost breaking the coveted 2:00 barrier with a time of 2:01.87. Other great North Rockland performances include Ray Lund who took 1st in the discus and 4th in the shot put with throws of 137-09 and 42-04.00 respectively. The North Rockland DMR team lead off by AJ Savoia and anchored by Joe Grimm took 3rd with a time of 11:16.99 behind Pawling and Centereach. The success of the relay teams was not over yet. The Raiders 4x4 team took silver, only seconds away from beating New Rochelle with a time of 3:33.21. The effort put out by everyone was amazing and it will be hard to top next year, but we know everyone will train and come back next year better than ever. Once again the Red Raider Relays was a success, and we’ll see you again at the 20th annual meet in 2007.
