06/21/07 Savoia Places 8th Overall at US Junior Nationals Senior Closes Out HS Career as 3rd Prep Overall in Race
Summer Steeple...NR's AJ Savoia Welcomed the First Day of Summer with his Last HS Race
Indianapolis, Indiana - North Rockland's AJ Savoia placed 8th overall in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2007 US Junior National Track and Field Championships held at the IUPUI Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis. The senior ran 9:36.69 in the final race of his stellar high school performance. Savoia finished as the third New York high school runner in the race behind New York State federation steeple champion Christian Thompson of Candor, NY and Nike Outdoor National champion Ryan McDermott of Chaminade, NY. Maryland frosh Greg Kelsey, formerly of Saratoga Springs HS, NY finished 7th.
06/16/07 Savoia Places 7th at Nike Outdoor Nationals NR Senior Just Misses Second All-American Title in 2,000m Steeplechase
Close, But No Cigar...AJ Savoia's 7th Place in the Steeple was One Spot Shy of All-American
Greensboro, NC - Most high school athletes would be happy with placing 7th in a national championship track and field event like those at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. After all, with athletes from great track and field states like New York, Oklahoma, and Oregon, just to name a few, even placing in the top ten in an event is a great accomplishment. North Rockland senior AJ Savoia, who came into the 2,000m steeplechase with the #1 time in the US at the distance (6:04.2) wasn't pleased with his 7th place finish in 6:07.12. Savoia, who had already claimed his first All-American title in last year's race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, was looking to give the Raider Steeplechasers their sixth title in four years, but finished one place shy of the mark. Yet, Savoia's goals coming into the race were higher than a top six finish. The top six finishers are named Nike Outdoor All-Americans. To his credit, Savoia's time stands as the sixth all-time fastest Rockland County boy in the event. results continued
06/09/07 Savoia Sets Personal Best, Wins State Division Championship
Going D-1...Savoia's 1st time on top of a state meet podium couldn't have come at a better time
Dietz Stadium, Kingston, NY - It is said that an animal is most dangerous when it is wounded. If such is the case with humans, then Miguel Reyes, 2003 New York State federation champion in the 3,000m steeplechase, showed fellow Red Raider steepler AJ Savoia how to respond from adversity. In 2003, Reyes was second in his section one state qualifier and looked far from state championship form. Reyes went on to win the New York state championship in the steeplechase the very next week. Savoia stared at the article that told of Reyes' heroism a day before he went after a state championship of his own. The senior was third overall in Section One and endured weeks of racing through agonizing back pain, yet he still lived to fight on. What a difference a week makes. Savoia placed fourth overall in the NYS Federation and first in the NYS Large School Division to win North Rockland's 11th state championship in program history. The senior ran a personal best 9:29.56 which ranks him fourth in Rockland County history. Senior Ray Lund capped off a strong season's end and high school career in the discus. Lund threw 147-03 to finish twelfth in division one. Alex Maisonette, only a junior, placed eleventh in the division one high jump. results continued
06/1-2/07 Three Raiders Qualify for New York State Championships Lund, Savoia and Maisonette Headed to Kingston
Three's Company...Two seniors and a junior are Headed to the NY State Outdoor Championships
LaGrangeville, Suffern, NY - The Red Raiders qualified three of its athletes for the 2007 NYSPHSAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Kingston, NY. North Rockland had one qualifier on each of the three days of competition. On Thursday in White Plains, senior AJ Savoia managed to win the division one section of the 3,000m steeplechase. The trip to the states in the to compete in the steeplechase will be Savoia's second in a row. On Friday at Arlington high school, junior Alex Maisonette earned his first trip to a state meet by winning the high jump at 6 feet. Finally, on Saturday, the last day of competition, Ray Lund completed the Raider contingent by finishing second in the discus which had been carried over from the previous day on account of darkness. Lund marks the first NR thrower to reach the state finals in over seven years since the departure of legendary throws coach Robert Murphy. results continued
05/18/07 Friday Night Fight Raiders Win Sixth Straight Rockland County Title Raju Leaps to Huge PR; Figueroa's Surge Wins 4x8; Savoia's Heroics Help NR
Knockout!...These Red Raiders Battled all Evening and Captured NR's 6th Straight County Title
Suffern, NY - Performances in an important championship meet like Anthony Raju's are hard to come by, but at the 2007 Rockland County championships, it seemed like each Red Raider athlete was trying to outdo the other for the sake of their teammates. Raju, a senior, cleared 11 feet in the pole vault to assure himself second place and a critical eight points coming down to the end of the meet. The mark was Raju's best by a foot. Another senior, Dave Figueroa, also felt his back against the wall and fought back. Figueroa saw the lead that teammate Christian Mendez opened for him slip through his fingers on the last leg of the 3200m relay. Needing the two points that falling into second gave NR, Figueroa used one last kick to pass Pearl River in the final straightaway to secure the victory. Earlier, Mendez had blown open another lead for himself by winning the 800m run. Moments like those typified the championship meet for North Rockland, which by the meet's end had beaten Ramapo 128 to 125.5. One could look throughout North Rockland's score sheet to find the difference in those three points. The Raiders saw two phenomenal efforts out of two young distance runners Chris Carrington and Nick Hughes. Carrington, a sophomore, and Hughes, a freshman were fifth and sixth in the steeplechase. Both set personal bests in the steeplechase, 3200m run and 1600m. Senior AJ Savoia won the steeplechase and the 3200m. Alex Maisonette won the high jump. Anthony Didio won the pentathlon. results continued

Senioritis?...These Raider Seniors Were Largely Responsible for the League 1B Championship
Orlando Field, West Nyack, NY - After trailing by five points at the conclusion of track events at the league 1B championships, all eyes focused on the discus and Raider senior Ray Lund who held the fate of his Raider teammates in his hands, literally. Lund sent his teammates and coaches home happy by winning the event and capturing the ten points necessary to jump ahead of the host school, Clarkstown South. Also contributing key performances were AJ Savoia who won the 1600m and 3200m runs and the winning 3200m relay of David Figueroa, Colin Galvin, Christian Mendez and Chris Tantillo. results continued

There will be a quiz...This is sprinter Norman Thompson and this is thrower John Stephens (This reporter somehow got the idea that Norman had won two shot put titles at Penn in the 1980's)
Franklin Field, Philadelphia, PA - The Raider 4x4 relay of Norman Thompson, AJ Savoia, Christian Mendez and Demba Musa set a seasonal best of 3:29.64 and placed third in their heat at the 2007 Penn Relays. Carmel's Reese, Hillhouse's Wilks Take Down Records Duo Show Strength and Speed; Earn RRR Top Honors
Re-Writing History...Terrell Wilks and Kristen Reese Made the 2007 RRR Extra Special Terrell Wilks photo courtesy of The Hartford Courant; Kristen Reese photo courtesy of The Journal News
Cordisco Field, Theills, NY - Those familiar with the Latin phrase "Veni, Vidi, Vici" would agree that Terrell Wilks from New Haven Conneticut's James Hillhouse High School did just that; he came, he saw, and he conquered. Wilks arrived for the first time on Friday afternoon at North Rockland High School in Thiells, NY for the 20th annual Red Raider Relays and proceeded to demolish a very fast 200m record right out of the semi-finals. Very few people in the crowd knew what to expect from the inconspicuous senior as the largely New York based group of fans focused on the usual core of strong local sprinters, but that soon changed. Right as the starter's pistol cracked to begin the first section of twenty-two heats of the 200m, everyone gasped as Villanova bound Wilks posted a time of 21.57 on the clock besting previous meet record holder Carlos Bedoya's time of 21.66 set seven years prior. Wilks went on to win the finals of the 200m on championship Saturday in 21.26 to further cement his record. Kristen Reese on the other hand is no stranger to the confines of Cordisco Field or the Red Raider Relays as the Carmel High School junior has been attending the Red Raider Relays for years. Reese absolutely destroyed a solid meet record in the 3200m of 10:51.41 set in 1999 by Jennifer Donovan of Half Hollow Hills and established a new Section One record in the process. Reese delivered a blistering pace enroute to her time of 10:33.81. Bay Shore's Callie Hogan, who ended up breaking Donovan's record herself, pushed her for most of the race, but in the end Reese was too much for Hogan to hang on to. Reese produced the best performance, boy or girl, on distance night. For their efforts, both Reese and Wilks walked away from the Red Raider Relays with the Michelle Dall Memorial award given to the most outstanding track performers.
4/17/07 Raiders Run Dual Meet Record to 3-0

The last track and field competition held on the grounds was in 1967 when the area was home to Suffern High School. Gladimir Sanon and AJ Savoia both won two events as North Rockland scored 79.5 points to remain undefeated at 3-0. results continued

New City, NY - Eighth grader Brendan Collins ran uncontested from the gun to win the frosh/soph division of the 3200m run at the 2007 Bill Markiewicz Memorial Meet. Despite blustery conditions and few runners in the race, Collins managed to run 10:58. Teammate Chris Carrington also ran well, claiming the frosh/soph 1600m run in 4:55. In the varsity division, distance teammates AJ Savoia and Christian Mendez won the 2000m and 1200m runs. Gladimir Sanon won the high jump. results continued
4/14/07 Savoia Leads Raider Steeplers in Strong Debut at Cornwall Frosh/Soph Triple Jumpers Congress, Bleck Win Green Dragon Title
2007 Home Opener...New Raider Steeplers Like Chris Carrington Found Cornwall's Pit Inviting
New Windsor, NY - AJ Savoia opened with a 6:17.5 2k steeple at the Cornwall Green Dragon Replays which has long been home to the true start of the 2007 Red Raider steeplechase season. Cornwall High School, which is also home to the original one event Steeplefest contested later in the year, has seen outstanding Raider steeple performances over the past ten years. The Green Dragon meet record is 6:11 set back in 2002 by Raider Dennis Gutierrez. In his first race, sophomore Chris Carrington placed second in the frosh/soph division of the meet. Frosh/soph triple jumpers Anthony Congress and Clevens Bleck did some fine jumping of their own, posting the only pup victory of the day. results continued |
