Raiders Finish a Strong 7th in NYS Federation Championships

Raider Team of 2008 Behind NRXC of 1988 and 1991 for Best Finish at Federation Meet in NR History

One of the Best...The Red Raiders Started the '08 Season Ranked 20th and Finished the Season 7th Overall in NYS.

Bowdoin Park, Wappinger's Falls, NY - Re-writing school history is never an easy task, but the 2008 North Rockland Red Raiders focused on running for their team from the beginning of the summer and did not stop until each of them crossed the synthetic green mat that was the finish line of the 2008 New York State Federation Cross Country Championships.  They had made it to the very end and in the process re-wrote the North Rockland XC record books.  Forget, for a moment, the newly-formed corporate meets that could dissolve in a moment's notice on the whim of some executive who's only concerned about the bottom line.  This the New York State Federation Cross Country Championships: the very last week of the cross country calendar in New York State and the Raiders had made it.  This race was and will always be for the best of the best.  Nick Hughes, Chris Carrington, James Naglieri, Charlie Lagos, Kevin Brophy, Brendan Collins, Jim O'Connor and Brett Bernard will forever be remembered as the team that earned the highest team place in the feds right behind the legendary NR teams of 1988 and 1991 which placed 6th.  The Raiders scored 255 points to place seventh overall.  Nick Hughes was NR's top finisher placing 15th overall.  There will always be arguments as to which team was the all-time best in school history, but this ambiguity is what makes cross country great.   We don't always need to know who the best is.  But one thing is certain: a team's greatness does not have to be measured by a shoe company, it is measured by how far into the season they make it as a team.  In 2008, the Red Raiders ran for each other, had seven athletes cross the finish line at the New York State Federation Championships and made school history.  results continued

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME

Hughes Blasts 16:25.1 for 6th Overall at State Championships

Junior Makes Significant Leap in Time, Performance at 2nd Career State XC Championships

Decisive Move...Nick Hughes Emerged From the Hills of Sunken Meadow and Passed Six People in the Final 800

Sunken Meadow State Park, King's Park, LI - Fifty places, that's how many spots Nick Hughes gained in one year's time of hard work, learning and patience.  Last year, in his first cross country state championships, Hughes finished 56th in a race he clearly needed to run to learn and grow from the experience.  One year later, Hughes emerged off of Cardiac Hill on the course of Sunken Meadow State Park, the site of the 2008 New York State Cross Country Championships, and ran himself into North Rockland Cross Country history.  Hughes finished 6th overall in the class AA championship in a personal course best time of 16:25.1.  Hughes' place is the third best in school history in a cross country state championship.  Raiders Todd Sinclair finished 5th overall in 1979 and John Martinez ('05) finished 2nd overall in 2004.  Hughes was Section One's top finisher in the race.  The State Cross Country committee also awarded the North Rockland team with an invitation to next week's 2008 Federation Championship.  results continued

Hughes Qualifies For State Championships

Raiders Finish Second To Suffern In Race For Team Title

Hughes Moves to Top Five All-Time at Bowdoin; Carrington Enters Top Ten; JV Team 3rd

Prized Performance...For the Second Straight Year North Rockland Will Be Sending Nick Hughes to the State Meet

Wappinger's Falls, NY - North Rockland's team hopes for a triple crown cross country season were ended as the Raiders finished second to Suffern in a ten point loss at the Section One Championships.  While each Raider posted personal bests on the championship course at Bowdoin Park, it wasn't enough as the Mounties took advantage of a Raider team that was too spread out in the first mile and never got going as a team.  The loss was North Rockland's first to Suffern all season.  Individually, junior Nick Hughes earned a trip to the New York State Championships at Sunken Meadow Park in Long Island with a 4th place, 16:35 finish over the 5,000m course.  Senior Chris Carrington broke into the NR Top Ten All Time @ Bowdoin Park with an 8th place finish in 17:02.  Charlie Lagos placed 11th in 17:15; James Naglieri placed 20th in 17:35; Kevin Brophy placed 28th in 17:52. Sophomore  Brendan Collins and freshman Brett Bernard ran great races for the Raiders placing 35th and 36th.  The junior varsity team placed third overall out of twenty-six teams with a 73 point team total.  Matt Moran (2nd) and Jim O'Connor (8th) placed in the top ten for the Raider team.  results continued

Raiders Earn Top Team Honors at St. Anthony's Invitational

Hughes Out-Kicks Port Washington's Bertolotti In Final Stretch For The Win; JV "A" Wins

Making Noise on the Sound...Each of the Raiders' Three Teams Ran Up to Expectations at St. Anthony's

King's Park, NY - Nick Hughes emerged yesterday from the trail alongside the creek that separates the finish line from the last half mile of the 5k course at Sunken Meadow State Park, the site of this year's state championship, and went for the win.  Trailing Port Washington's talented Marco Bertolotti for the entire race, Hughes hung close as the course rolled into the back mile of the course and onto the infamous Cardiac Hill.  As the two emerged from the creek side trail, Hughes found another gear passing Bertolotti and earning his team one point and the individual victory in 16:43.  But the real story was the job the next four Raiders accomplished as Chris Carrington and underclassmen Charlie Lagos and James Naglieri finished in the 4-6 spots under three seconds apart.   Kevin Brophy finished fifth for the Raiders in 14th place in 17:49.

In the junior varsity race, sophomore Brendan Collins sailed smoothly over the 5k course in 18:17 to win the race while teammates Matt Moran and Nick Badstein swept the top three spots.  The trio held off a string of six St. Anthony's runners and helped the Raiders to a 31-35 victory over the home team.  Sophomore Chris Grant was most improved for the jv squad with his 11th place finish in 19:20.  Jim O'Connor was fifth for the Raiders in 19:32.

North Rockland's JV "B" Squad earned a solid second place finish behind Warwick Valley.  Freshman Dan Mackey and Mike Sambrato had big breakthroughs running one-two for the team. They were followed by Frank Kelly and Taylor Vippolis.  Possibly the best Raider performance of the day was turned in by freshman Jon Miklos.  Miklos emerged as a true cross country runner and put out a great effort as fifth man for the team.  results continued
